Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is home to two amazing stunt shows, but the one that started the trend is the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! Loosely based off of stunts you may recognize from the first Indiana Jones film, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” this show chronicles Indiana Jones as he avoids a series of near-disasters, allowing guests to see how these miraculous stunts came to fruition in the movie!
The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! actually begins a few minutes before the actual stunts begin to take place, so be sure to get to your seats early for the show. Before the set is revealed, several audience members are chosen to be a part of the show, serving as real extras during one of the scenes. The directors are looking for outgoing participants, so if you would like to participate, be sure to sit close to the bottom of the theater and show plenty of enthusiasm as soon as they come out to ask for volunteers!
The actual stunts begin in the Peruvian temple scene from the beginning of the movie. The Indiana Jones stunt double has to dodge spikes coming out of the ground as well as re-enacting the famous rolling rock scene in which he is chased by a huge boulder that is threatening his life. The set is then changed to mimic the streets of Cairo, and this is where the audience volunteers get to show off their acting skills as citizens at a street market. Indiana Jones and his cohort Marion are innocent bystanders watching street performers do acrobatics before a fight scene breaks out, causing them to escape in what ends in a fiery crash in a Jeep loaded with explosives. The final scene is from the part of the movie where Indy and Marion attempt to stop the Nazis from flying the Ark to Berlin, during which they have to avoid massive gunfire, a German mechanic and more pyrotechnics before prevailing to safety.
Even if you are not an Indiana Jones fan, you will still marvel at the authenticity of the stunts and the behind-the-scenes know-how of the directors and stunt performers. It helps that this show was choreographed by Glenn Randall, who was the stunt coordinator for all of the “Indiana Jones” movies, which is not advertised to guests but is apparent once you see the quality of the stunts in this 35-minute show.
One other thing to check out as you are either entering or exiting this attraction is the empty well outside just to the left of the main entrance that has a sign affixed to it that says, “Do not pull this rope.” In true Disney fashion, be sure to give this rope a good yank to catch yet another hidden surprise! This is far from being the only surprise you will find at the Walt Disney World Resort, however, as there are things to discover around every corner at the four theme parks and two water parks on property.
