The Magic of Disney Animation
Disney’s Hollywood Studios has undergone a lot of changes throughout the years. When the park first opened, it was a real, working set for TV shows and motion pictures while also serving as a theme park for guests, but has since evolved into a place where guests can get a glimpse of the glamour of Hollywood right in the midst of their family vacation.
One of the first major, and perhaps the most important, components of Disney’s Hollywood Studios when it opened was Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida, which was stationed right in the heart of the theme park. Classic Disney animation films such as “Lilo & Stitch,” “Mulan” and “Brother Bear” were all produced and drawn here on-site by Disney animators and in fact, The Magic of Disney Animation attraction began as a tour that let you get a sneak peak at animators hard at work on these projects. That all changed, however, when Walt Disney Feature Animation moved to California, leaving the tour an empty shell of what it once was and forcing it to close for a refurbishment in 2003 and again in 2004.
When it re-opened, The Magic of Disney Animation became a much more interactive attraction. After a short video called “Drawn to Animation,” guests are then shown the old studios of Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida before entering a series of exhibits and stations. You can add sound and color to an animated scene, find out which Disney character you are most like, take your photo with one of your favorite characters who filter in throughout the day or, for one of the best-kept secrets at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, visit the Animation Academy. Here, guests get to test out their drawing skills as they are instructed by a Disney artist on how to draw one of their favorite characters – and you even get to take your masterpiece home with you!
The Magic of Disney Animation is certainly not the same attraction that it was when it first opened, but it is still a great way to get an in-depth look at Disney’s beloved animation. And, if you want to skip the video at the beginning, you can always access the interactive zone from the exit. When standing in front of the building, to the far right you will see the merchandise shop, which is also the end of the attraction. Simply walk through the gift shop and keep going back until you enter the area – this is also the way to go if you just want to visit the Animation Academy and nothing else.
